Matthew Varacallo MD

Matthew Varacallo MD is a board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon who also serves as the Director of Orthopedic Robotic Surgery and Chief of the Sports Medicine department at Penn Highlands Healthcare system in Western Pennsylvania. Dr. Varacallo is an Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in joint preservation, cartilage restoration, sports medicine surgeries, and joint reconstruction. He currently is the team physician/surgeon for Clarion University Athletics (NCAA Division I and II athletics), Penn State-DuBois Athletics, and the DuBois Dream, a semi-professional basketball team competing in the Premier Basketball League (PBL) and previously of the North American Basketball League (NABL).

Dr. Varacallo obtained his Medical Degree (MD) from the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. From there, Dr. Varacallo completed his orthopedic surgery residency training at Drexel College of Medicine / Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. After his residency, Dr. Varacallo went on to an Orthopedic Surgery Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Kentucky under the prestigious mentorship of Drs. Darren Johnson and Scott Mair.

During his time in Kentucky, he was part of the team of physicians caring for the NCAA Division I Collegiate athletes affiliated with the University in addition to his role as team physician for Georgetown College athletics, which included the 2019 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship team.

Dr. Varacallo's affiliation with the DuBois Dream spans multiple roles since 2016 -- he has been a player, assistant coach, and team physician/surgeon. The DuBois Dream has been an annual participant in the widely popular basketball charity event (“The Basketball Tournament (TBT)”) since 2016. TBT is annually televised on ESPN and features many of the top former and current professional basketball players (former NBA players, current overseas, and high-level division I talents) competing in a March Madness NCAA-style format for the ultimate prize of $2-million dollars being awarded to the national champion and the respective team’s designated charity associations. Notable athletic affiliates include Demarcus Cousins, Chris Paul, Jason Williams, Mike Bibby. Dr. Varacallo is rapidly expanding the sports medicine footprint in the expanding Penn Highlands Healthcare System. In 2019, he joined into practice with his brother, Dr. Chris Varacallo, who is fellowship trained in Primary Care Sports Medicine. The two brothers have teamed up to create a unique combination to provide comprehensive (operative and nonoperative), cutting-edge, sports medicine and orthopedic treatment options-- including ultrasound guided carpal tunnel release, minimally invasive tenotomy (tenjet) procedures, orthobiologics (PRP etc), and unique perioperative total joint cryoneurolysis analgesic options to help expedite recovery following total joint surgery!
