Matthew Varacallo MD is a board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon who also serves as the Director of Orthopedic Robotic Surgery and Chief of the Sports Medicine department at Penn Highlands Healthcare system in Western Pennsylvania. Dr. Varacallo is an Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in joint preservation, cartilage restoration, sports medicine surgeries, and joint reconstruction. He currently is the team physician/surgeon for Clarion University Athletics (NCAA Division I and II athletics), Penn State-DuBois Athletics, and the DuBois Dream, a semi-professional basketball team competing in the Premier Basketball League (PBL) and previously of the North American Basketball League (NABL).
Dr. Varacallo obtained his Medical Degree (MD) from the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. From there, Dr. Varacallo completed his orthopedic surgery residency training at Drexel College of Medicine / Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. After his residency, Dr. Varacallo went on to an Orthopedic Surgery Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Kentucky under the prestigious mentorship of Drs. Darren Johnson and Scott Mair.
During his time in Kentucky, he was part of the team of physicians caring for the NCAA Division I Collegiate athletes affiliated with the University in addition to his role as team physician for Georgetown College athletics, which included the 2019 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship team.
